Reducing burnout through connection: 4 ways to make work feel lighter

Burnout is often framed as a workload problem. And of course, workload matters. But we know it’s not the whole story.

83% of workers globally are struggling with burnout, according to Forbes. And that figure is rising. Look at the average workday and you can easily see where some of that pressure comes from. Back-to-back meetings. Too many apps. Information that takes too long to find. Good work that goes unnoticed. Few opportunities to speak up or simply connect with colleagues.

This is friction at work. Friction that keeps adding up.

We recently held our third Bright Conference, where leaders shared how they’re tackling burnout in their own organizations. In one roundtable, the conversation got very practical: what are they actually changing to make work easier and help people stay connected?

Here are four ideas worth stealing.

Protect people's attention

A packed calendar leaves little room for focused work, or even a pause between conversations.

At Bright, Kate Podmore from Atelier Ace LLC shared how her team is creating more space in the workday. Every Wednesday is meeting-free, giving people a full day to focus. On other days, meetings run for 25 or 50 minutes, so the next call doesn’t start the second the previous one ends.

Wednesday has another purpose too: a 30-minute “Water Cooler” chat, with one rule: leave work out of it. It’s simply time to talk, catch up and connect as people.

Want more connection? Give people space to focus.

Make recognition part of the workday

Feeling valued at work often comes down to small, everyday moments. Someone notices the extra effort. A colleague says thank you. Good work gets recognized.

For Gabriella Ocasio from Baltimore Aircoil Company, this plays out in a demanding manufacturing environment. Her teams can face tough conditions, including extreme heat. One response has been a role-swapping program, giving employees the chance to rotate when the work gets particularly demanding.

The team also introduced “Bravo” cards, making peer recognition part of the day-to-day experience. Employees can recognize a colleague’s work through a simple app, and the program has reached 60% engagement.

A thank you takes seconds. Making it easy to give one can go a long way.

Reduce the effort it takes to get work done

A task might look simple and still take too much effort. Find the right app. Remember the login. Search for the information. Switch back to where you started. Where was that again?

At Bright, Sarah Mackay from Adams Fairacre Farms put a name to that feeling: app fatigue. Employees needed a clearer way to find important updates and share information.

Tamara Palmer from Flagger Force shared one way her team tackled it. They brought shortcuts to frequently used tools directly into their main employee app, cutting down the number of clicks and places people need to navigate.

Cut a few clicks here and there. Across every task, every day, it adds up.

Connection requires a voice

How do you expect to connect your teams if you don’t let them participate? Yet opening comments on company communications can feel risky. What if people complain? What if the conversation gets difficult?

Tamara Palmer from Flagger Force shared what actually happened when her company gave employees that space. In six years of open comments, they’ve only had to remove ten posts. For her, that open dialogue has helped connect people across the workforce.

Nicole Swecker from The Cigna Group has seen something similar. Her team keeps comments open even when leaders communicate about sensitive topics. And employees often respond with support.

Giving people a voice means giving them a place in the conversation. Sometimes, the response might surprise you.

Small changes add up too

Another example of how Bright can surface surprisingly practical ideas for workplace challenges as complex as burnout.

A meeting-free day. Five minutes between calls. An easier way to recognize a colleague. A few less clicks. Comments left open.

Small changes that create a little more space for people. And just as friction adds up, so can the things that make work better.
